Are single sex schools a bad idea

I went to an all girls school but I think I would have been happier at a mixed school.
I found my school very bitchy and obsessed with looks but maybe its the same at mixed schools.
Do you think going to a single sex school makes girls more likely to get an eating disorder because personally have had problems and know lots of girls from girls schools who also have?
Does it leave you less able to get on with the other sex?
I feel I missed out on the opportunity of having male friends.

I think single sex school promote bitchiness and competitiveness. It can also make girls slutty due to desparation for boys. Mixed sex schools can help girls get a stronger sense of humour and get familiar with male comapny.

The main purpose of school, as another answerer above me stated, is education. Thus, I think that whichever makes the students academically stronger, whether it be single-sex schools or mixed schools, should be the way to go. It is not the duty of schools to prepare you to interact with the opposite sex, it is the duty of schools to educate you.

And just fyi, Rollie, feminists don't "go ballistic" about the idea of all-boys schools, provided that there are also all-girls schools which are just as good as the all-boys schools.

I understand what you're saying but it has been proven that single-sex schools produce students who achieve much better grades than in the co-ed schools. Some students may not the social aspect of single-sex schools, but academically, it seems to be the better way to do it.

Spending time with the opposite sex really should occur outside of school these days. Schools have become out of hand and it's not a dating service - you're really there to learn the books. This way, there's less distraction, less chances of teenage pregnancies and the students can focus more on their schoolwork so they don't become drop-outs and idiots who didn't pay attention. You're not there to learn about boys and how to date them or fight them off...Leave those things to do on your weekends.

My mom went to a co-ed school with certain single-sex classes, like math and history. The theory was that girls do better in math when they aren't competing with boys, because there's such a stigma against women in math, and that in classes with a lot of debate such as history, separating the sexes is best so that people don't obsess over what the opposite sex will think of what they say.

Personally, I think co-ed schools are a better preparation for the real world. I think that the same-sex classes idea may have benefited my mom, though, and helped her be more independent. So I'm in between.

I went to an all boys school, and it made me really shy of girls. By year ten, (back then 4th year seniors) when we had a pretty training teacher, I blushed every time she was near me.

I think the philosophy is that kids are more distracted by the opposite sex at that age, but that made no difference, we still had slow kids and brighter ones.

I don't believe it would make a big difference to eating disorders, having boys around to impress may also make girls more competitive.

well I went to an all girls school. Bryn Hafren Girls School.

I know what you mean by the bitchyness and looks, but I didnt miss out on having boy mates because I had them still.

I was sort of glad boys werent in my school because you hear about the mixed school by us, the girls fighting because some other girl is talking to her boyfriend, which we never had.

Also the mixed school had a lot of sex, in toilets, fields, gym.,

Not that all mixed schools do but when I have a child she will be going to an all girls!

I think single sex schools are a bad idea because you don't learn how to act with the other sex.

You just think of them as amazing sex creatures to have your way with.

I have plenty of male friends and have grown up knowing that i can feel comfortale around them.

It is bitchy at mixed schools and it is focused on looks, but not as bad as obsession.

yes and no what about gay and transgendered children they will feel even more isolated and awkward. secondly our government has never been good at separate but equal. either the boys or girls will receive a lesser education. third boys and girls need to learn socialize and co-exist. i mean the workplace will not be single sex.

i agree with dixie, sure you talk with friends outside of school of the opposite sex, but you don't really work with them in a working environment. and yes it might produce stronger students but mostly has to do with the fact parents send their kids there because they are smarter, or distracted, and trying to get a better education.

Since everyone is different some people will be less able to be with the opposite sex. When I was in college it was a male and female school. But you couldn't leave at night alone that was the only suckish part. I had a lot of male friends. Same gender schools are not all bad it depends on the person.

Studies on the topic have been mixed. Some show that all girls school benefit girls academically, but all-boys schools do not necessarily boys. I'd be interested in hearing the thoughts of a professional educator.

No, single-sex schools are a good idea educationally.

If you consider school to be a social club, you may disagree. But IMO the main purpose of a school is education.

Single sex school is actually a great idea. Boys and girls learn differently, so single sex school would allow each gender to reach their full potential.

Boys should be allow to be boys without having feminized ideas being force on them.

IMO

Academically, yes, in some people's opinion; it allows girls to compete on their own terms, instead of trying to compete with boys. I find this claim rather patronizing.

Socially, probably not.

Fitting in and blending at ANY school is hard. It might be fun experimanting a mixed school if thats not what your used to it! It might be hard since you dont know that many more people.. if I were you I would give it a try... who knows you might enjoy it!

i believe public mixed schools are the best, then the children can socialize (which is very important) with everyone in the community and arent sheltered from other people. single sex schools are also abit gay.

nature does not accommodate separation of gender

its wrong and unhealthy

divide your brothers and sisters is the next step to alienate human contact...that is the bureaucracy of certain individuals

Interesting that feminists are in favor of all girls schools, but will go ballistic if you have an all boys school.

I'm not for single sex schools. I think schools should be co-ed and seperated by learning style.
