Stretch and sweep, an internal where they 'sweep' your cervix with a finger to see if it starts things off, its a little uncomfortable and doesn't always work but worth a try. report abuse

the midwife will insert 2 fingers into your cervix to check for dilation and if you are beggining to dialte will move her fingers in a circular motion to seperate the waters from your cervix. This doesn't mean your waters will break or anything. Its done as this releases the hormone that starts contractions but however it doesn't always work. It did for me though about 1 hour after. If your not dilating she cant do the sweep. report abuse

It's a membrane sweep................ they will insert a couple of fingers and run them round the neck of your womb. report abuse

its where they open the cervix and sweep the membranes off to try bring things on its more uncomfortable than painfull report abuse
