Help getting 5 week old to nap

My son is almost 6 weeks old and he doesn't nap real well. He is awake for really long periods of time and when he does doze off in my arms he wakes as soon as he's put down. He only sleeps well when in his sling or out for a ride. Even then he'll wake up as soon as we take him out of the sling or as soon as we get home and inside our condo.

I need help getting him to sleep better during the day because it is really affecting his sleep at night (up every 1.5 to 2 hours and has a hard time getting back to sleep.)

How can I get him to nap and then stay asleep when he's put down? How do I get him to sleep for longer stretches at night? (like 2-3 hours at a time or longer?)

You should get the book babywise! I got this book at five weeks when my son would not nap on a schedule and would wake every two hours at night. He went from sleeping only two hours at a time at night to sleeping 6-8 hours straight by 8 weeks and by three months he was sleeping 10. Now at five months he sleeps 12 hours at night and two times a day takes two hour naps. If you have the time to be schedule oriented or as my husband calls me (schdule natzi) this book is amazing! It tells you everything you need to know but the main the thing is to have a constant routine and schedule! I know it helped me because now I can plan things and can anticipate when was son it hungry or tired before he even shows it. He is just the happiest little boy! He also loved to be swaddled and we just broke him of that habit at four months!

You can't really get a newborn to nap. And newborns also do not know the difference between day and night. They sleep when they want and will eat when hungry. I have an 8 week old and I feed her on-demand and let her sleep and wake when she wants. Eventually he will sleep for longer periods of time.

My son was similar, but we could get him to nap by talking him for a walk in the stroller, then we would just park the stroller in the house, and he'd finish his nap, I would even walk the stroller around the house sometimes, that way after he was asleep, you didnt have to worry about moving him.

Try swaddling your baby and putting him in a swing. The rocking motion would put my kids to sleep and keep them asleep. Just make sure you always have batteries for it, it's a lifesaver!!

maybe if hes got the musical gym to keep him occupied whilst on the mat he may just fall asleep whilst you maybe lying next to him but not actually holding him as such so that he thinks he still close to you x

Breastfeed right before nap time (natural tranquilizer).

Try a swing. My babes only likes naps in the swings when they were that age.

That's tricky....I think I'd advise to watch for signs of him being tired sooner. If a baby gets overly tired or overly stimulated, they don't sleep well ( as you said about night time sleeping). Some babies yawn, other's rub their eyes, some get fussy. My 4 month old burrows her head into my shoulder and that's how I know she's ready for a nap. At the first sign of being tired, swaddle him up and put him in bed or in a swing...whichever you prefer. Also, just as at night, develop a nap time routine ( shorter than the night one) so that he knows it's time for napping.

I hope this helps!

Congrats!
