Concerned mother

I don't know if anyone could answer this question but today I took my 6yr old daughter for her annual check up. My daughter is usually seen by a woman ,however today she was seen but a male doctor because her doctor was out. Anyway I felt really unconfortable because the doctor asked her to shrip down to her underwear and the he had her lie down. He then began to check her in her private and open the lids. He said he was checking for infections. Weird thing is that last year for her 5th year appointment the female doctor never did that. She never placed her hands on her genitals. What do you guys think? I know that for infants they do that but for a 6yr old. I felt really unconfortable but didn't say anything. Do you think I am a little paronoid?

I don't think you are paranoid either. I think I would be upset too. But, I did find an article from the Mayo Clinic that describes a physical for children 5-11 years of age, and checking the child's genitals, according to them, is part of the exam.

To put your mind at ease, I would call the office and discuss this with the nurse or with the female doctor you usually see. If you were uncomfortable with it, you need to get some answers. Only you knows what is best for you and your child. I'd rather be paranoid than wrong.

Hope this helps.

If you were uncomfortable you should have stopped the exam. Unless your daughter had shown signs of any sort of vaginal infection, he shouldn't have been checking her. You need to call your regular doctor and express your concerns, check to see if this is something this doctor does all the time, and then if you still believe your daughter was in some way assaulted you need to contact the police.

I can't say if you were being paronoid or not, but if you were in the room, you could have refused to let him.. simple as that.

My daughter's doctor (and she is female) does check my daughter's privite areas at her yearly check up. I'm not concerned, but that is the practice in our doctor's group. I was glad last year she did, my daughter had a problem that was caught early.

I would be concerned and call the clinic immediately to ask if that is a new practice. If they say yes, problem solved. If they say no, kick up a fuss. It is better safe than sorry-- ask for peace of mind if nothing else.

Unless she was complaining about some sort of irritation, it is unusual for him to check her genitals. Most doctors stop after babyhood and do not start again until the first pap smear (after virginity is lost) unless there is an issue of concern.

If you were there why did you not step in and ask what he was doing? YOU are the child's mother it was up to YOU to do so. Now AFTER the fact you don't like it, but YOU allowed him to do so. I do know that some doctors do check gentitalia during check ups...and yes young children (even babies) can get yeast infections. Next time you have a problem with something a doctor is doing speak up.

I do NOT think you are paranoid.

This seems totally inappropriate to do to a 6 year old unless there is other evidence that that area of the body may need examination.

I know that some doctors are worried about molestation these days, but unless he had some reason to suspect such a thing he was out of line in my opinion.

you are being paranoid. they always do this when they turn 6. he's a doctor with you in the room???? he should have told your daughter though that he can only do this because he is a doctor and because you were in the room. our doc ALWAYS says that so my sons know that this isnt something a normal adult should be doing

I find this practice uncommon. Even in my annual a male doctor calls in another female nurse/tech if you like when this exam is done for examples like this. Unless you verbalized a concern of possible infection this shouuld have not been done

I think it might depend on the doctor. I remember having my genitals checked as a child by all the doctors i went to, male and female. If I were you, I would call a few other doctors and see if that is normal.

You are not Paronoid. I'm 16 and every check-up I've had the most i ever had to do was to lift my shirt to listen to my heart. And I have a male doctor.

That guy is a freak

I went to every check up and my daughter is 11. They never did that to her. Not even close. Never had her undress either. Just lifted her shirt to listen to stomach and breathing. Weird.
