You sure that's kosher? My mechanic tells me ethanol rots out the rubber parts of the engine.

With some simply modifications, any gasoline powered engine can run on alcohol. Alcohol powered dragsters and Indy cars run just fine on it at 100% and e80 (80% ethanal / 20% gasoline) is becoming more and more available through out the country.
Alcohol burns in free air with essentially an invisable flame and also requires special fuel system materials which are not degraded or corroded by the alcohol. Other than that (and perhaps some laws which might be somewhat upset that you are not contributing to their motor fuel taxes) and the fact that it isn't the best start up fuel - especially in cold climates - you're good to go.

Sadly, brewing your own alcohol isn't legal (the liquor companies saw to this).
You can make beer or wine, but hard alcohol is off limits.
But hopefully we can make a change in that, and then... yes, you can brew your own fuel for a car that runs on alcohol. They have a lot of such cars in Brazil, in fact.

I have a 98 Taurus I will sell you it is flex fuel and will run on 85% alcohol.
And yes you can make your own alcohol. You can manufacture as much methanol as you want.

There are many engines that will run on alcohol or a mixture of fuels they were developed by the NAZI army in WW 2, and they have not been developed since.......
