How do I get rid of snails without harming my fish or completely tearing down the tank

I liked the answer to use Puffers, I've never heard that before, I guess it would depend on what the other fish in the tank were though...if you have a Cichlid tank full of snails don't do it unless you have a vendetta against innocent little Puffers. I have tried the lettuce/cucumber thing and all that happened was that the fish ate all the vegitation before morning anyway. I have several Loaches in my tank; Khuli, YoYO, Clown & Dojo & they eat a few here and there...but not enough to make a diffrenece just enough to prevent them from staging a mutiny and tossing out all the fish. I don't trust the snail killer even though it says may be safe for fish because in the same breath the bottle says not safe for plants and other invertibrates other than snails, and so on and so forth.
The only fool proof way that I practice and trust (even though it may take FOREVER to get them all) is to take a little tiny net and slowly scoop them all out.

Also Attn "Dum_Bass": Go fu_ckyou_rself. What if someone with no common sense reads this and thinks everyone on here is serious and trying to help & dumps a gallon of bleach in their tank? It could happen so why don't you just save your sarcasm and what you thought was brilliant wit for the pages you are usually on...you know the ones involving beastiality and red wheeping sores. Yeah dude those bumps you got are from that goat. Some people may wonder why I am being so hard on this guy...in another one of his answers he answered a question to a CHILD about height by insulting the length of his dick...in another he told a heavyset man to kill himself that fat people were ******, *******es and he wished they'd all die....yeah THIS GUY IS A D**CHE B*G. I was just going to send him a way less hurtful, discrete e-mail but he posts so many sick, disgraceful,CRUEL answers he chooses to block anyone from being able to contact him via e-mail or IM. I'd hide too if I was that pathetic. MY E-mail is availible buddy...contact me.

Sorry to rant on your question Tom, good luck with the snails! :)

You do get snail killing compounds in most good pet shops. These are usually based on copper compounds that indiscriminately kill invertebrates, Therefore if you have any invertebrates in your tank then this will not be a solution for you. If you over dose it will kill plants and the fish. The issue with this is if the solution doesn't kill the fish then you run the risk that it may kill your filter bacteria which combined with the dead decaying snails will then kill the fish.

Snails usually come in on new plants. The best bet is to treat all new plants in a copper, or failing that a salt, solution to kill snails before putting them in your tank.

If it is a marine tank then puffer fish are good snail eaters.

For fresh water tropicals the best bet is Botia almorhae (lohachata) aka Pakistan or Yoyo loach if you'd prefer a more natural solution to your problem, most loaches including the clownloach eat snails but the Yoyo is the most avid eater of them.

*EDIT* - You can also trap them, I think sera make snail traps?....anyhoo the method is basically baiting, there was a previous yahoo question that the best answer describes this baiting technique, its the second link that is below.

Hope that helps. I've included an article below if you'd like some further reading.

They sell solutions but I don't like using something that kills the snails in the tank because then they rot in there and cause a huge bioload for your tank.

If you put in a piece of lettuce or cucumber they are attracted to it and you can pick them out.

If you don't have hundreds you can hand pick them from the tank.I accidently got some in my tank when I purchased a living plant. They were on that.I picked them out and tossed them.Sometimes if there are only a few good sized ones, can leave them in.They are kinda cool to watch.
