HElP! My neon tetras are disappearing from the tank. Ive lost 3.

I have a 12 gallon tank with 4 glow fish, 3 neon tetras, 1 cory catfish, 1 African dwarf frog and a snail. We went away for the 4th, when we got home there was a tetra missing. I did a tank cleaning and never found him, I thought maybe he'd decayed and the cory ate him. I went to the pet store, bought 2 more tetras. Yesterday I wake up and another tetra is missing. there is no sign of him anywhere. I wake up this morning and another one is missing. I have no idea where they are going, or what is happening to them. I feed the tank twice a day and have never had a problem until now. Please help if you can.

Based on the fish in your community tank this is a bit of a puzzler. I'm sure you have a top on the tank and neons are not known as 'jumpers'. Your guess that one could have died and been eaten is a good one but for this to happen to two of them in so short a period of time with no visible remains is unlikely. Now we have to eliminate everything else and whatever we are left with is what must have happened. We have to be like Sherlock Holmes detectives. I can only think of one other possibility but you will have to pin it down to determine if it's correct. They must have been eaten BUT you would have to have pretty large glofish and the neons would have to be pretty small. Of the neons that were eaten, were they the smallest ones AND is one or more of your glofish big? Do you ever notice the glofish chasing the neons around? This is the only thing I can think of. If this is it, your solution at this point is to make sure (if you replace the neons again) you get big full grown neons. They are (generally) more expensive but they will be too big for the glofish to eat.

Good luck.

I too have had a filter suck up a small fish and deposit it in the filter's tank. You may want to look in your filter carefully. However if it isn't there, my bet is the fish died or got sick and the frog or catfish ate it. It really does not take long for a hungry fish to eat a tankmate.

well, all the fish you have named can't eat the neons in one piece and i don't assume that they're all dying instantly, as soon as you purchased them. so i'm guessing that your filter might be a little to strong and sucking them in?? neons also aren't known for their lleaping abilities either so check for them in the filter, that's the only logical explanation for this.

Hmm..Well when my family had neons they always kept disappearing when there were other big fish around, it's possible they could've gotten eaten, even if you do feed the tank twice a day.
