How can I defend myself from a pitbull

I started a dog walking business in my neighborhood and I finally got a customer. There is a big problem the person wants me to walk his pit bull and his lab. He claims the pit bull is nice but he keeps jumping up on me. I want to know what to do in case this dog snaps at me. I do not want to turn the job down, because I finally got a customer. I was not able to get a customer all summer.

You have a problem if the pitbull tries to attack another dog or person while your walking. How does the owner feel about a muzzle? The only other solution is a choker, but they have problems too, if the dog is untrained.

You should educate yourself on breeds! It'll take time, but the more you walk them, the more you learn about specific breeds. Pit bulls have a negative reputation because PEOPLE made them that way. Pitbulls are usually never people agressive, even the fighting ones because they are constantly around people but the aggression is channeled towards other DOGS, not people.. They are not praised to attack a human, they are praised to attack another dog. But if there are plenty of pitbulls that are not used to fight!! I know tons that wouldnt know what to do if they were thrown in a fight ring. Pit bulls are like any other dog, if you praise them and train them to do a certain thing they are going to do it because, sadly, they just want to please their owners! That's all a dog wants to do is please their owners and thats the only reason people have gotten to turn some of them into fighters.

Just remember: Just cuz its a pitbull does NOT mean it's aggressive and will hurt you!!! The more you walk him, the more trust you'll build with him or her. You'll be her buddy!

I am not personally afraid of pitbulls with which I am acquainted. It is unlikely that the dog will suddenly turn around from his nice walk and attack.

Just walk him like a normal dog, and if he is a jumper, turn around and withdraw your attention until he gets the idea.

Pitbulls are usually very sweet dogs with the unfortunate violent streak, but I wouldn't worry about a dog that is familiar with you.

If he was going to attack you... he would've done that already. Pit bulls are just very rambunctious. He's probably just all excited about going out for his walk. He just needs to be leash trained, like any other dog. Don't even think about mace, dude! All the dog needs is some training... and if this is your line of work, I would focus on helping him with that instead of worrying about him turning on you. Pits are not as aggressive as folks make them out to be (unless they've been trained to be). I had one... trust me, they're lovers, not biters!

He's jumping on you? This sounds more like a dog with bad manners then an aggressive one. Forget whatever someone told you about pit bulls and walk the dog.I'm sure the owner would have alerted you to any aggression the dog might have had before asking you to walk him

It sounds like he is jumping on you only to get your attention. When he does that, just cross your arms and turn your back on him until he stops. You can also get clicker from a dog obedience class to use. Most of the Pitts I know are clowns, not cold blooded killers.

One thing that will help is not to be afraid around him. He'll sense your fear and not see you as a leader. Be calm and assertive. (Where did I hear that before????) Also, when you walk him, be sure that he follows you. Do not let him walk in front of you. This will put him in a follower position.

lots of dogs jump. has he growled at you? shown teeth? Given you any indication that he's going to snap at you? No? then get over the stuff you have been spoon fed by the media. what you have is a pitbull with no manners when it comes to not jumping on people.

i have two pittbulls. the male doesnt like people at all but the female is really gentle . so when ever me and my dad take them on a walk we always put a muzzle on the male and a shock collar but we only use the collar if he gets very dangerous.

You have to show the dog that you are in control. No dog will attack the person if the person shows the dog that the person is the dominant one.

you can't -but understanding the aggressive nature of the dog AND having the proper equipment is a start.

Pit bulls have a bad rap, but it's all in how they were raised. If you are afraid of the dog you probably shouldnt be walking him. Good luck
