Puppy and temper fits in public

My pup is 10 weeks old. We got her at 4 weeks (long story). She is generally a pretty good pup on her routine. I think her worst things is when she wants to play and you go to pick her up and she goes wild trying to bite you. I just hold the back of her neck until she is done being upset at not getting her own way and when she is calm... I play with her or put her down. But when you take her out and she gets over-excited it is the same thing but worse... For example today she was playing with my older dog and they were getting loud in the park that was full of people so I separated them. My pup was not happy about that and turned on me. I realize that this is a time to establish that she is the pup and that I am the boss. So I hold the back of her neck and hold her down until she is done and calms down. My problem is that when I hold her down...she is very loud and flips around and it sounds like I am abusing or killing her and I am worried that someone will report me for hurting her!

Instead of taking herinto the general public, take her to a puppy kindergarten course or just hang out at a training facility where others are training their dogs. Take her by herslef, not out to play with your dog, or she'll think too much of herself - which of course, she already does.

Explain to the people who run the place about the problem - you will find someone there to help you socialize her.

These kinds of little darling can be tough, and yes - very embarassing when faced with people who don't know about squerelous puppies - but you will get help from a bunch of dog trainers, and you can perhaps just hang out on the periphery to get some mileage on her. Just make sure they know what you're doing.

Good luck - who knew that dogs could do the same as the little kid screaming on the floor in the dairy aisle...

Bythe way, you should get her a little Gentle Leader - they work wonders!

Try using a muzzle that will prevent her from biting you, then when she barks just close her mouth and say NO BARK!..only hold for a few seconds if she continues gradually hold her mouth for a longer amount of time. This should give her the message that this behavior is not tolerated.

Stop taking her out in public until she's trained. And yes getting her at 6 weeks its part of the problem more so if she was allowed to just run ram shod over the older dog and wasn't disciplined by you or the older dog. And by public i mean the park. Take her for walks but that is it.

You need to get a handle on this now so time for puppy classes or find a trainer willing to do one on one. She has to learn that she cannot do this when you try and reprimand her. Its that or just ignore the looks from other people. If they haven't had to deal with what you are doing they will only assume the worst in most cases.

You arent doing anything wrong. I took mine to a behavioral class and they told me to do something very similar. I keep a small spray bottle with 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup lemon juice in it and I spray her nose when she acts up and it shuts her up real quick. It doesnt hurt at all, it just irritates her nose a bit.
