The breed we now know as Australian Shepherds were used by the farmers and cowboys of the 1800's - they are a possibly a combination of English Shepherds, Collies, Basque Shepherds, and God Knows What that worked the best at the next ranch...but there are many pictures of cattle drives with them by the side of the cowboys... you would also find Australian Cattle dogs as well. report abuse

In America, Australian shepherds were gaining popularity in the 1800s, having proven their ability to herd cattle. Greyhounds were used for hunting, and small terriers were on hand for keeping vermin under control. I would imaging that spaniels were used for hunting. report abuse

Don't forget about APBT's, American bulldogs, and AmStaffs. Farmers used them in the field, and cowboys used them on both the field and as catch dogs. report abuse

Most likely just a mixed breed herding dog.. I dont think they really had any particular breed.. if the dog could herd that was good enough. report abuse

All they called them back then was Herding dogs. I don't know if they had a recognized "breed" name at that time. report abuse
