Is my DVD player broken It wont play. Everything is grayed out except the 'eject' button.-E-Answer.Net

I am a new US Government employee. They sent me a Dell laptop with Windows 2000 and some DVD videos explaining my job. I watched about 20 minutes of the first video and suddenly everything went black. (I later found that I didn't have it plugged in properly and the battery died.) Now I can't get it working again. Not only is everything on the controls greyed out, but the control panel is in the middle of the screen instead of the bottom. I contacted their tech support, and he didn't know how to fix it.

Help. I am going to get fired before I even get started.
