Tax question about mileage

I work as W-2 employee. My taxes are already deducted from my pay check. But Mileage check is straight 0.42 cents a mile, there is no tax deduction. For example Drive my car 100 miles, I get 42 dollars. My job involves alot of driving.

My question is ; Do I have to report these mileage checks as an income at the end of the year? Or Are they tax-free, Since I have to pump gas, maintance my car, etc.

Assuming that you detail your mileage to your employer, since the amount you are being reimbursed is less that the IRS allowed amount, you don't have to report it. But if you itemize and deduct mileage, you'd have to subtract the reimbursement from the mileage expense that you claim.

You offset your reimbursement against the IRS standard mileage rate. It was 50.5 cents per mile through June 30 and is not 58.5 cents per mile. You are being paid 16 cents less than cost.
