Does high minimum wage equals high cost in living

For example: minimum wage in Georgia, is 5.15, New York, is 7.15.
In Georgia, average rental for a one bed room is 550 but you can get a two bed room in a great naborhood with no drugs or murder for 650. New york, average rental for one bed room I hear is 1800 for something decent and I don't think that's even a two bed room apartment. Basically what I'm tyring to ask is- if 7.15 is minimum wage in New York, and I'm getting paid 10.00 an hour would that be enough for me to survive in NYC, living in a one bed room apartment or even a studio for that matter?

Um, no--$10/hr will not be enough to live on comfortably in NYC. Hell, I lived in Seattle for four years, and $10/hr there would be tough. Not impossible, but tough.

As the poster above me said, minimum wage is set at the state level. I'm pretty sure Washington State (where I live) has the nation's highest minimum wage (something like $8.50/hr), but even in rural Eastern Wash., that's not exactly a lot of money.

You should think of large cities as exceptions to the so-called minimum wage rule, in my opinion. While $7.15 is probably perfectly fine in up-state New York or in smaller towns across the state, most people end up living in less than desirable neighborhoods. Or having several roommates just so they can make rent affordable.

If you want to see some realistic numbers, go to the CNN cost of living calculator here: http://cgi.money.cnn.com/tools/costofliv...

Plug in your annual salary, city and state, then plug in your expected salary in NYC, plus the city and state.

I plugged in Atlanta, GA with a $20,000/yr salary (i.e., $10/hr) and compared it to Queens, NY (Queens being less expensive than Manhattan) and found that you'd need to make at least $9,000 MORE in NY to get by (i.e., $15/hr). And housing costs, alone, are 116% higher in Queens than they are in Atlanta, GA.

I believe that minimum wage is set at the state level. Since the figures you quoted are by state not by city, I believe I am right. In my state minimum wage is set at the state level.

New York City is a very high cost place. So, do not expect to be able to live in NYC on your own earning $10 per hour. There are much lower cost areas in New York state outside of New Your City. Living in a lower cost area outside of NYC and commuting to the city might help, but then you will have commuting costs. Sharing an apartment with friends would go along way toward making life more affordable for you.
