Please explain why an organization should benchmark

To see if they are doing better or worse compared to past results. Also once the benchmarks are set they can start fiddling with different variable and see if that improves performance or makes it worse.

Bull-ro is correct. Benchmarks also let you compare your company performance against the competition and industry standards. This will give you a better idea as to whether you are on target or not.
