Most people spend between 4 and 6 days dealing with a tongue piercing. Usually you will have one day where you think this is the WORST idea you've ever had and you just want to take it out. If you can get past that day, you're set.
To help keep your swelling down, take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or tylenol. Don't do any heavy excercise, get into a shouting match, or otherwise raise your blood pressure for a few days. Sleep with your head elevated. Suck on as much ice as possible. Ice water and other cold drinks will help. If you don't like having a big ice cube, try smashing some up in a ziplock baggie and eating the chips instead.
Soft foods will help limit stress on the piercing. If you don't like soft food, try eating small meals of food you do like. Eating a bit and then letting your piercing rest will limit wear and tear as well. Avoid super spicy food.
Patience and good cleaning will get you through the first week. Eventually your tongue will go back to normal, give it time.

It takes a couple of days for the swelling to subside then a week it should not be so bad. If you don't want to ice it, drink ice water then let your toungue rest. You want to avoid sugary foods/drinks right now to avoid bacterial infection because bacteria's favorite source of energy is simple sugar.
It will be better very soon. Just a lot of patience.
