Do america prefer light skin over dark skin african americans

ive noticed whenever i turn on the television or look inside a magazine , the token " black girl " is light skin,or mixed.i am a paper bag color african american, but this trend still bothers me. there are lots of beatuful african american women out there,do america have something against them.if my child tuned out dark skined, i would want her to see someone who looks like her in magazines and on tv.have anyone else noticed this trend ,if so what is your take on it .

Hi Sherna, i know exactly what you mean.

I dont know if im dark or light skinned lol but it seems to be more praised by media if you are light or mixed.

Its sad that the more diluted you are of being black or the more european you are, the more 'beautiful' you are.

lol this is not the apparent case as i know many unattractive light skinned girls and lots of dark skinned beautiful girls, vice versa. I dont look at people skin complexions but more at their features, like their eyes and i am more concerned with who they are.

Its sad scoiety is like this and i doubt it is going to change any time soon.

I sure hope it's not a matter of preferring lighter tones, as women are beautiful in all shades. Unless I'm wrong, though, there are far more people who are "mixed" and therefore not very dark than otherwise. Maybe it's about availability rather than preference? Are darker-skinned women who apply for modelling jobs more likely to get turned down? I think perhaps that kind of discrimation would have gotten some media coverage if it was the case, but it would be interesting to look into.

I am myself at the other end of the spectrum. I have naturally fair skin that resists tanning and easily gets damaged (burning, freckles, facial veins, allergic rashes), and I've heard my share of comments on how I "need" to get a tan. So I guess what they're saying is that the skin they're born with is better than the skin I'm born with. Hmmmmm....sad. You'll notice there aren't many "pale" models either.

I think it the media because it makes people feel one thing is better than the other. I personally think dark skin is very beautiful.

i do believe that americans like their skin color "tan" because i always see the white americans go to tanning salons, go to the beaches to tan, etc.
