Try a few approaches. I'm a photographer and I have a girl I always call on when I need a make up artist that I heard of by word of mouth. You can get this connection either by assisting an established artist or by offering to work for prints. Sorry to break it to you but your first few years of work are going to be working mostly for tear sheets until you get a book together. ModelMayhem and OneModelPlace are great networking sites for getting your tear sheets together. You really don't have much choice but to start out this way. No one goes to an agency and gets hired, there really are far too many artists out their --especially editorial and fashion.



Eventually you can approach agencies that represent makeup artists and see what they say, the best way really is to suck up to an established artist though. You can even offer to pay some their half or whole day rate to train you in their methods and then hopefully have them call you when they need an assistant after you've proven yourself reliable. That's a pretty desperate measure but it works sometimes. Sadly the market really is saturated with makeup artists (and wannabees thanks to MAC --they crank out crappy artists and send them to fashion week to work for free to increase their brand awareness even though they barely have training)
