Ok, this just makes me sick to my stomach!!!

Ok, so I just read on a few message boards that the reason they are closing Rent on broadway this year is to make room for High School Musical! I mean come on, what is broadway coming too! I mean yes, I totally know that Rent had an amazing run on broadway that there will most likely be a revival sometime in the future, but I am still so sad to see if go especially for High School Musical. I mean honestly which story is more important? I mean when I saw Rent for the first time it really just changed my life, if inspired me and made me feel so good, anytime I'm down and listen to the soundtrack it just makes me happy and there is just such a great message to the story. Does anyone know if there is even really any truth to this whole HSM thing? If it true then I am just so mad! What do you guys think.. I know I'm kind of over reacting at the moment but I just heard this so it's fresh on my mind...I'll calm down eventually.

ok, i knew rent was closing. but replacing it with high school musical is just wrong!!! high school musical on stage should be ment for kids to perform it. there are so many other shows that should take rents place instead

You're misinformed about the way Broadway productions work.

The closing date of "Rent" was decided a few months ago, due to declining ticket sales. I had no idea that "High School Musical" was going to become a Broadway show, but if it's going into the theatre that is currently housing "Rent," then that just means that the "HSM" producers [Disney] knew "Rent" was closing and therefore pursued a tenancy agreement with the theatre's owner -- starting once "Rent" was closed.

So in a nutshell, Disney is NOT forcing "Rent" to close. No producer has the power to close another producer's show -- when a production starts in a theatre, that tenancy agreement cannot be canceled unless [1] the show's producer decides to close the show or [2] the theatre owner doesn't get paid by the producer.

The bottom line is that any producer is free to engage an available theatre. The theatre currently housing "Rent" is coming available, so Disney engaged it. Therefore, Disney is not forcing "Rent" to close. Simple as that

First, even on some touring level RENT will be around awhile, much as Cats, Phantom, etc. have been. Lion King is still rolling too.

I agree with Ms. Von Trap, WDW knew of that opening in what might otherwise be a vacant venue, and took advantage of it.

I also agree with you who asked the Q, but the fact is, MONEY is the object, and The Mouse Production won't ever be a classic, nor will it have a hugely long run there. While it might be a company that offers a vast range of various entertainment venues & genres, Disney is in the Profit making business.

RENT will also live on in DVD, CD, soundtracks, Youtube, etc. As long as "IT" is owned it will be marketed.

Just my 2 "scents"
